What Does Pampas Grass Look Like

Another name for pampas grass is cortaderia selloana. Cortaderia refers to its sharp-edged leaves. So, be careful when handling it. However, pampas grass is more notably known for its height and beautiful plumes.

Male and female pampas grass look different. You can tell them apart from the plumes growing at the top of the grass. Female plants grow broad, full plumes, with silky hair-like tendrils growing from the small flowers. Male pampas grass has a less full look since it doesn’t grow these silky hairs. Both male and female pampas grass require the same attention.

Pampas grass typically has white plumes. However, you may come across pampas grass with pink plumes. Rosea is a type of pampas grass with light pink plumes. It’s smaller and more delicate than typical pampas grass.

There is also a dwarf variety of pampas grass. Dwarf pampas grass grows to only about 60 inches tall. It’s perfect for smaller yards or if you simply want a shorter plant.

As a self-seeding plant, pampas grass can spread prolifically. You may have heard it referred to as a noxious weed. In some areas, pampas grass is considered an invasive species. It is a successful species, and it can spread and drive out other plants if it’s allowed. As a result, some areas prohibit planting pampas grass in residential gardens. So, check your local regulations.

Typically, however, pampas grass is a great, hardy addition to your landscape and can be used in various ways. When asking yourself, “What type of pampas grass should I choose?” the answer will depend on where you want it in your landscape and for what purpose.

Pampas Grass in the Landscape

Pampas grass is often used on either side of a driveway, garage, or home. It can make a lovely focal point in a yard or mixed bed. It can also create a living privacy screen. Another gorgeous way of using pampas grass is landscape layering. Layering creates depth and dimension by including plants of different heights, textures, colors, etc. Because of its unique look and texture, pampas grass is a desirable addition to your landscape's layers. This dramatic plant can help transform your yard.

How to Care for Pampas Grass

Pampas grass is easy to grow. For the first few months after planting, water this decorative grass deeply about twice every week. During the first year, a deep watering about once weekly during periods of drought is ideal. After established, pampas grass is extremely drought tolerant. If your soil is nutrient weak or your plant doesn’t seem to be growing well, feed it in spring with a slow release fertilizer.

Since pampas grass grows so fast, you can trim it to the ground every year and it will grow just as tall. Trimming your pampas grass to the ground in late winter or early spring will encourage lusher growth in the coming year. Prune your pampas grass almost to the base, and keep the ground around it free of weeds.

How to Plant Pampas Grass

Plant pampas grass in growing zones 7, 8, 9, 10 , and 11 for best results. This ornamental grass prefers full sun, but will grow in partial shade as well. It’s adaptable to any well-drained soil. Water your potted pampas grass well immediately before planting. Dig a hole about twice as wide as the pot, but not quite as deep as it is tall. Place the grass in the hole and make sure the top of the root ball is slightly higher than the existing soil line. Backfill the soil around the root ball and pack it in gently to remove air pockets. Water deeply until the ground is thoroughly saturated.

It’s also easy to grow pampas grass from seed, although it takes two or three years before it matures. To plant pampas grass from seed, press it into the dampened soil where you want it to grow, and keep it moist and warm. Consistent light is necessary for the seeds to germinate. Once the seeds sprout, it may be easier to put individual plants in their own pots to give them the best chance of thriving.
