Clematis

What is Clematis?

Clematis is a climbing, vining, flowering plant. This genus contains more than 250 species and is in the buttercup family. These species have many common names including traveller’s joy, virgin’s bower, old man’s beard, leather flower, and vase vine. These flowering vines are woody and vigorous. The blooms come in a variety of colors from white to purple to pink .

How to Grow Clematis

Plant this climbing vine by a trellis, mailbox, wall, arbor, fence, lamp post, or somewhere it can climb. Flat surfaces may need something like mesh for the plant to grab onto as it climbs.

How to Care for Clematis

Clematis can be grown in full sun to part shade. Full sun is best for flowering, but this vine will be happiest when the roots are shaded(especially in hot climates). A layer of mulch about 2 inches thick should be applied in a mound around a clematis vine to protect the roots. Ground cover plants can also be planted around vines to shade the roots. These climbing vines are adaptable, but prefer well-drained soil. Feed clematis plants in spring with a balanced slow release fertilizer.

When to Plant Clematis

Spring and early to mid fall are the best times to plant clematis because of the warm, moist soil at these times of year. They can be planted at other times as well. Just avoid planting during extreme temperatures and when the soil is frozen.

How to Plant Clematis

Water your potted clematis well right before planting. Dig a hole that is twice the width of the root ball. Place your plant in the hole. The top of the root ball should be just slightly higher than the existing soil line. Backfill the hole with native soil or a 50/50 mixture of native soil and organic planting mix. Tamp down the soil gently to remove air pockets. Water until the soil is thoroughly saturated. Fertilize with our slow release fertilizer. It will give your new plants a boost and shorten establishment time. Apply 2 inches of mulch around your clematis vine. Extend the mound a few inches past the rootzone to protect the roots, help retain moisture, and keep weeds away

When to Prune Clematis

Late winter or early spring is a good time to prune clematis vines. Minor pruning can be done at any time, but avoid pruning off flower buds when you are pruning close to bloom time.

How to Prune Clematis

Cut this vine back with bypass pruners in late winter or early spring. Leave about 1 to 1.5 feet of base growth to maintain and invigorate your clematis vine. New vines can be pruned when planted to encourage a bushier plant.

When do Clematis Bloom?

Some clematis bloom in spring while others bloom in summer and fall. Some varieties repeat bloom. These reblooming clematis bloom in both spring and summer/fall. The Pink Mink blooms throughout summer. Sweet Summer Love blooms all summer and into fall. The Purple Happy Jack and Sweet Autumn Clematis bloom from mid summer into fall.
