View full detailsOregon is a coastal state with some climate differences throughout the state. According to the USDA Oregon is divided into growing zones 4b, 4b, 5a, 5b, 6a, 6b, 7a, 7b, 8a, 8b, 9a, and 9b. Only small microclimate spots within the state are 4 and 5. The coast is the hottest region consisting of zone 8 and 9. The rest of the state is primarily zones 6 and 7. Choose drought tolerant plants for best results in eastern Oregon where the climate is arid. If you live on the coast look for plants that tolerate salt. Determine your growing zone before buying plants and be sure that the plants you choose will grow in your climate.

Evergreen shrubs are generally planted in spring or fall. Winter planting is actually a good option in a majority of the state. Evergreens shrubs that are cold hardy can be planted in winter when the ground is digable even in the colder regions of the state. Summer planting should be avoided in coastal Oregon. Spring, summer or early fall planting is ideal for the coldest regions of the state (growing zones 4 and 5).
Water your new plant thoroughly in the pot before planting. Dig a hole that is about two times as wide as the root ball and not quite as deep. The top of the root ball should be slightly visible over the existing soil line. Fill the soil back in around your plant. You can mix the native soil with an amendment up to 50%. Gently pack the soil with your hands to remove air pockets. Add about 2 inches of mulch around your plant and water until the ground is saturated.
Early spring is generally the best time to prune Evergreen Shrubs in Oregon with a few exceptions. Prune flowering evergreen shrubs when they are done flowering so you don’t remove any flower buds. Prune evergreen hedges yearly in late spring after new growth has emerged. Minor pruning can be done at any time during the year. So, don’t overthink it if you want to tidy up your bush or remove a broken branch.
You actually have several choices in Oregon for shade loving plants. For full shade areas look to the Green Mountain Boxwood, Gold Dust Aucuba, Hicks Yew, Japanese Plum Yew, or Duke Gardens Plum Yew. For part shade areas choose boxwood, camellia, azalea, distylium varieties, holly, gardenia, or juniper.
Gardenia, distylium, Hot Flash Camellia, October Magic Camellias, loropetalum, Fragrant Tea Olive, and Encore Azaleas are evergreen flowering shrubs for full sun. Most of the newer varieties of boxwood can tolerate full sun. Arborvitae (thuja), juniper, nandina, holly and Mugo Pine all enjoy full sun.
