Winter Gem Boxwood FAQ

How Should I Mulch A Winter Gem Boxwood?

Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base of the shrub but not against the trunk and a foot out past the foliage. Mulching the your boxwood will help to maintain moisture and protect the root system in the colder winter months.

Where Should I Plant This Shrub?

Plant this adaptable boxwood in a spot that has well drained soil and full sun to part shade exposure in grow zones 5-9. A great selection for mass plantings and also does well in containers.

What Are Good Companion Plants For These Boxwoods?

Junipers, roses and daylilies pair well with the winter gem accenting a deck, patio, or entryway.

Winter Gem Boxwood Care

Planting

Winter Gem Boxwoods grow in full sun to part shade. They adapt well to a variety of well-draining soils.

Watering

Water deeply twice weekly when newly planted to help the roots grow properly. Add 2-3 inches of mulch to help your new plant stay moist. Once established this boxwood is drought tolerant. However, boxwoods will perform best when watered once weekly during dry periods, including in winter. Bronzing can occur when the roots are dry and this evergreen shrub is exposed to sun, wind, and freezing temperatures. This Winter Gem is one of the first to green back up though.

Fertilizing

Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to give your boxwood a boost.

Maintenance

Pruning can be done anytime of the year. However, it is best to avoid pruning in late fall as pruning will stimulate new growth that will be too tender to survive the freezing, winter temperatures.

This boxwood is deer, rabbit, and pollution tolerant as well as pest and disease resistant.

Landscape ideas

The Winter Gem Boxwood makes a lovely hedge. Trim for clean curves and sharp lines and angles. Leave unpruned for a more natural look. Plant a single shrub or group. Define corners with a group of 3. Plant as an accent bush in a mixed bed or garden. Boxwoods are great for containers.

Accent your deck, patio, porch, or entryway for a classy look. Boxwoods are generally shaped into balls. Step outside of the ball and into the box...try squares and rectangles for a showy look that will catch everyone's eye! Transform your landscape with boxwoods. The options are endless! Go formal. Go casual. It's all up to you!
