How To Care

Spring and fall are ideal times to plant your Fragrant Tea Olive. The Tea Olive grows in zones 7 to 10, but can be patio grown or grown indoors in other zones with appropriate care and conditions.

Fragrant Tea Olives prefer full to part sun. These shrubs are adaptable to any soil as long as it is well-drained soil. Water your new plant deeply about twice a week throughout the establishment period. After establishment, Tea Olives are extremely drought tolerant and low maintenance. In the first year, if the weather is extremely dry and hot, water your plant deeply about once weekly. If needed, fertilize with a slow release fertilizer once yearly in early fall. There is no need to prune this shrub unless you want to limit size or shape. If pruning is desired, prune in late winter or early spring. Tea Olives bloom on new growth so keep that in mind when planning your pruning.

Fragrant Tea Olives are disease and pest resistant and tend to only encounter problems when stressed. So, planting in the correct conditions and providing appropriate care are the best ways to keep these plants healthy. Scale is one of the few potential insects that can affect Tea Olives. This can be treated with horticultural oil. Diseases are easily avoided by ensuring your soil is well drained and never saturated.

Best Online Plants I have Bought

These two 3 Gallon Fragrant Tea Olive came beautifully packed and with moist soil -- they were HUGE almost three feet tall -- with full and bushy leaves - even though I didn't pay for the transit. -- they are in the ground here now in Zone 7 -- I ordered them in December in North Carolina -- they are doing very well and we will definitely be back for more plants and perhaps a few more of these :) Thank you!!

Super !

These were good sized plants for a 3gal size. They were received in very good condition and still looking pretty happy after 3 days in the ground.

Not performing well

I purchased three of this product. I've tried several different locations. Shade, sun, part sun, part shade, all shade, all sun.. Nothing , no area did any good. This is a very poor performing plant. Won't buy anymore.

Amazed at the quality

We recently purchased a 5 gallon tree and 5 gallon shrub. They came in beautiful condition! We were amazed and will be purchasing again.

Plants are very very small for being a 3 gallon plants.

We have ordered in the past from an another organization and when I ordered 3 gallon plants from them they were at least 3 feet tall and roots were secured. Your plants came in and they were only 1 feet tall which was a disappointment and now in the ground they are wilting. Don't know what to do?

Fragrant Tea Olives are generally going to be shorter this time of year. Later in the season the same plants are easily twice as tall, but the maturity of the roots is about the same. Please send us photos to support@theplantingtree.com so we can help you with problems you are experiencing. We are happy to help. Jill R, Horticulturist
