Are Palm Trees Native to Florida?

While there are palm trees all over Florida, very few are actually native plants. Most Florida Palm Trees have been imported from South America and Asia. The native species of Florida Palm Trees are Everglades (Paurotis) Palm, Florida Silver Palm, Needle Palm, Florida Royal Palm, Florida Thatch Palm, and Cabbage Palm.

How Fast Do Palm Trees Grow in Florida?

Most palm trees tend to grow at a fairly slow growth rate. Windmill palms grow 6 to 12 inches per year. Sago Palms grow at a very slow rate of growth. They usually only grow about one inch yearly. As far as European Fan Palms, young plants can grow fairly quickly, up to 1 foot per year, but they slow down considerably as they age and grow only 1 or 2 inches each year.

How to Plant Florida Palm Trees

Pick a good site for your Florida Palm Tree. Be sure to follow the recommendations for your chosen tree. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball of your Palm tree. Put your tree in the hole and check each side to ensure your tree is straight. The root ball of your tree should be slightly higher than the existing soil line. Fill the hole with water and allow it to absorb before backfilling the soil. After planting, add 1 to 2 inches of mulch around the base of Florida Palm Trees. Extend the mound a few inches beyond the tree canopy. Using mulch in Florida and other tropical and subtropical regions is important. It helps the ground retain water longer, protects the roots, and reduces weed competition. Water again until your plant is thoroughly moist. Deeply water every day for the first week and about twice per week for the next one to three months while your tree’s roots are establishing.
