Experience the beauty and the fragrance of a Southern Magnolia in even the smallest yards! The Little Gem Magnolia is a dwarf version of the Southern Magnolia. And This Little Gem is a big hit!

Enjoy the huge, scented, white flowers you know with an even longer bloom time! Little Gem Magnolias bloom from spring through summer! This Magnolia can be grown as a tree or a large shrub.

With a low canopy and an evergreen nature like her mom, but a shorter stature of about 20 to 25 feet, the Little Gem Magnolia makes the perfect privacy screen! Its rich green foliage is dense. With a shiny, green top and cozy, brown bottom, the leaves of this Magnolia are the perfect backdrop for the most prized trait, those gorgeous blooms!

The mature width is only 10 to 15 feet, making this small flowering tree perfect for just about any yard! This evergreen Magnolia thrives in full to part sun and is adaptable to just about any well-drained soil. Water this tree well for the first few months so the roots grow just right.

Once your new tree is established it will be drought tolerant. The Little Gem Magnolia is also pest, disease, and deer resistant as well as salt and pollution tolerant. This tree is easy to maintain and does not require pruning. Luckily the south can't keep this dwarf Southern Magnolia all to themselves! The Little Gem is cold hardy and can grow in a cooler zone 6!

Little Gem Magnolia Care

Spring or fall are the best times for planting. If you live in an area with mild summers or mild winters you should be fine to plant at these times. Follow the recommendations below to choose the best location for your new Magnolia.

The Little Gem performs best in full to part sun. Magnolias are very adaptable; soil can be anything from clay to sand to loam, but be sure it is moist and drains well. Be sure the planting site doesn’t hold water. This can drown the roots which can cause root rot and ultimately the death of your tree. When your tree is newly planted, water deeply 2 to 3 times per week. You want to maintain this schedule for about the first 3 months while your plant is establishing. After this time your Magnolia will be quite drought tolerant and only need watering once weekly in summer. Mulching is a good option especially with a newly planted Magnolia. 2-3 inches of mulch will keep your soil moist and cool. It also keeps weeds and grasses at bay. Weeds and grass can steal nutrients and water from your tree. Fertilize with a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring. If pruning is necessary, prune right after flowering has stopped to best avoid trimming off next year's flowers.
