An explosion of fragrant, snowy white blooms coat the Star Magnolia in early spring. The sights and scents of this charming tree are not to be missed. This compact beauty is a stunning addition to any landscape that will be treasured for years to come!

The Royal Star boasts large, 3 to 4 inch, double blossoms. These sweet scented, star-shaped blooms are frilly, fringed, and feminine. They don't look like quite like any other flower. This dwarf tree is multi-trunk and can even look like a large shrub. Deep green, lush foliage and smooth, silvery gray bark add to the interest of this petite tree. Green to pink fruit pods form and ultimately reveal orange-red berries in fall, attracting songbirds and other wildlife. In winter, buds form that are visually similar to pussy willows catkins.

The Royal Star Magnolia is only 10 to 15 feet tall and wide at maturity making it a super versatile landscape option. It is one of the few flowering trees that can be planted even in tiny yards! This elegant Magnolia is prized for its showy, fragrant blooms, but it has an appealing, rounded shape that makes it look lovely in your yard year-round. This small, but mighty tree offers a high-end look at an affordable price. An added bonus of the Royal Star Magnolia is that it attracts butterflies!

Royal Star Magnolia Care

Spring or fall are the best times for planting. If you live in an area with mild summers or mild winters you should be fine to plant at these times. Follow the recommendations below to choose the best location for your new Magnolia.

Magnolias thrive in full sun to part shade. Magnolias are very adaptable; soil can be anything from clay to sand to loam, but be sure it is moist and drains well. Be sure the planting site doesn’t hold water. This can drown the roots which can cause root rot and ultimately the death of your tree. When your tree is newly planted, water deeply 2 to 3 times per week. You want to maintain this schedule for about the first 3 months while your plant is establishing. After this time your Magnolia will be quite drought tolerant and only need watering once weekly in summer. Mulching is a good option especially with a newly planted Magnolia. 2-3 inches of mulch will keep your soil moist and cool. It also keeps weeds and grasses at bay. Weeds and grass can steal nutrients and water from your tree. Fertilize with a standard slow release fertilizer in early spring. Magnolias don’t generally require pruning, but prune in midsummer to early fall if needed.

Choosing the proper location and providing appropriate care for your Magnolia goes a long way toward preventing disease and pests. A healthy tree is much less susceptible to infection and infestation. Luckily, Magnolias tend to be naturally disease and pest resistant. Magnolias are sometimes affected by an immobile pest called scale. This pest can be treated with horticultural oil. Be sure to coat the entire tree. You may need to apply more than once for complete control. Fungal diseases like Powdery Mildew can be treated with a copper fungicide, but more often than not the best method of control is removing and disposing the affected leaves once they shed in fall/winter.

Landscape ideas

Plant as a single specimen of focal tree just about anywhere. This tree can even be planted under larger trees as long as it will still receive at least 4-6 hours of sun. This will give your yard a more lush look. The Royal Star shines when planted in groups or hedges! You will treasure the abundance of blooms in spring and look forward to the fragrance all year! Start your very own cottage garden with the Royal Star Magnolia as your showpiece! Be sure to add a bench so you can enjoy the scent and beauty of this magnificent tree.
