Layers of beautiful white to pink colored blossoms arrive in spring. Soon bronze-purple leaves emerge. As the temperature warms the purple foliage deepens to that distinctive Newport Plum deep purple. Rounded dark purple fruits about the size of a cherry tomato are produced in late summer. These unique fruits attract wildlife like squirrels and birds and add even more interest to this exciting tree.

Plant this hardy tree in the center of the lawn or plant several in a staggered pattern along the back yard. Use the Newport Plum at the corner of your home.

Plant at least 10 feet away to allow plenty of room for your tree to grow. Wrap a bed around this flowering tree and add Hostas for rich color contrast. Use your Newport Flowering Plum at your driveway entrance. Plant one or go for a symmetrical look with one tree on each side.

This tree thrives in full sun and tolerates most soil conditions. Once your tree is planted, maintain a regular watering schedule for the first growing season. Newport Flowering Plum Tree Care

When planting your Newport Plum be sure to choose the right location and conditions for your new tree to thrive. Spring and Fall are ideal times to plant. However, if you avoid freezing temperatures and extreme heat you can plant your Plum tree almost any time of the year.

These trees tolerate full sun to part shade, but perform best in full sun. The Newport Plum tree is extremely adaptable to any soil as long as it is well drained. Water deeply when planting and twice weekly for 1 to 3 months while this tree is establishing. Once your tree is established, it is drought tolerant; you will only need to water during dry spells. Adding a layer of 2 to 3 inches of mulch is recommended especially with newly planted trees. Do not allow the mulch to touch the trunk as this increases the chances of pests and disease. Fertilize in early spring and when planting to give your tree a boost. Choose a slow release fertilizer. When planting take care not to burn the roots by mixing the fertilizer into the soil before placing your tree in the hole. Prune when your Newport Plum is dormant (winter - early spring) to remove any dead, dying, or crowded branches, or to maintain shape.

The best way to prevent disease and pests is by providing the appropriate care for your plants. Proper location choice, watering, and fertilization are the keys to your success. The Newport Flowering Plum is a hardy tree that rarely encounters pests and diseases. Scale, Aphids and Mealy Bugs are insects that can affect Flowering Plum trees. You can treat these pests naturally with horticultural oil, neem oil, or insecticidal soap. For severe infections you can use pesticides like carbaryl, also known as Sevin. Tent Caterpillars are sometimes an issue for Newport Plums. These can be treated with an organic spray, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), Occasionally fungal issues can arise. Generally, treating after infection isn't extremely effective, so if you have problems yearly treat in early spring with fungicides to prevent infection. Neem Oil is an organic method of treating and preventing some fungal diseases and pests. The entire tree must be coated in order for this method to be effective.
