How To Care
When planting your Raspberry Shortcake be sure to choose the right location and conditions for your new plant to thrive. Spring and fall are ideal times to plant. However, if you avoid extreme temperatures you can plant your Raspberry plant almost any time of the year.
Raspberry shrubs thrive in full sun and well-drained, moist, slightly acidic, nutrient-rich soil. Water deeply when planting and 2-3 times weekly for 3 months while your Raspberry plant is establishing. During the growing and fruiting seasons, a raspberry will do best if the soil is kept moist. Adding a layer of 2 to 3 inches of mulch is highly recommended for Raspberries. Mulching helps to maintain soil moisture, controls weeds, and gives added protection during extreme temperatures. Fertilize when planting and in spring with our balanced, slow release fertilizer. Raspberries grown in containers will need fertilized more often as nutrients leech out of the pot when you water. We would recommend early spring, late spring and mid-summer. This compact raspberry doesn't require all the pruning many traditional raspberries do. Late winter is a great time for pruning any dead or crowded branches. However, if you have a hard time knowing which is which (don't feel bad - it isn't easy with dormant plants!) prune in spring after new growth has emerged.
The best way to prevent disease and pests is by providing the appropriate care for your plants. Proper location choice, watering, and fertilization are the keys to your success. The biggest pests of raspberries are birds. You can put up bird netting to protect your crop. If positioned properly, this is an extremely effective deterrent. The Raspberry Shortcake is pest and disease resistant so you aren't likely to have any serious issues.
