Description

You already know that the Ginkgo is one of the most recognizable trees, but did you know this Chinese native goes back over 270 million years?! What?! I know! It blew my mind too. I mean if that doesn't tell you that this is a hardy tree I don't know what will! Heck all of the Ginkgo's relatives are long extinct! Darwin would certainly recommend the Ginkgo. An individual tree can live as long as 3000 years! Yes, I mean 3000; that isn't a typo!

Fall lovers, eat your heart out! The Ginkgo welcomes autumn earlier than other deciduous tree when its lovely and unique, fan-shaped green leaves become a bright and bold yellow. Watch out your window for your Gingko tree to be the first to remind you that it’s PUMPKIN SPICE EVERYTHING TIME! Woohoo!

This tree can be used as a shade or an ornamental tree. Even though this tree can grow quite large, it is actually great for confined spaces as the roots are not invasive. The Ginkgo even works great as a street tree. It tolerates pollution, drought, and salt and is even pest resistant! Once established this tree requires NO CARE! Easy peasy!

How To Care

When planting your Ginkgo tree be sure you have the right location and conditions for your new tree to thrive. Spring and fall are ideal times to plant. However, if you avoid extreme temperatures you can't plant any season depending on your zone.

These trees grow in full and part sun and prefer soil that is well-drained. The Ginkgo can adapt to any soil and even clay as long as it isn't saturated. This tree can even tolerant varied pH ranges. Mulching will aid in keeping the roots cool and moist in hot environments and protected from extreme cold in colder zones. Add a layer of 2 to 3 inches of mulch. Do not allow the mulch to touch the trunk as this increases the chances of pests and disease. Ginkgos should be watered deeply about twice weekly until established. The Ginkgo is drought tolerant once established. Fertilize in early spring and when planting to give your tree a boost. Choose a slow release fertilizer. Ginkgo trees don't require pruning, but, if needed, prune when they are dormant to remove any dead, dying, or crowded branches, or to maintain shape. Ginkgos are pollution and salt tolerant so they are great street trees. Ginkgos are extremely resistant to pests and diseases.

Landscape Ideas

The Ginkgo tree is a unique and exciting tree. With a mature height up to 60 feet and width around 40 feet, the Ginkgo is a formidable shade tree. Plant 1, 2, or 3 in your front or backyard as individual specimen trees or a small grouping or plant a row to line your backyard or a long driveway. Space your shade tree hedge so that each tree has at least 15 feet on either side. This tree makes a statement and offers cooling, energy-saving shade. The River Birch tree is also a great alternative

Ginkgo Greatness!

My most recent experience at PlantingTree was excellent -- as it's always been in the past! In this latest shipment I bought a 6ft Ginkgo Tree. It arrived expertly packaged with an also health 1g Brown Turkey Fig Tree in a really tall (6ft+) tall slender box. It got here to Virginia in a short span of time (Wednesday?) after having placed the order over the weekend. More importantly it arrived healthy, green, vigorous and in all other manners -- intact! In the past I've also ordered flowering fruit trees, gumpo azaleas, shrubs, etc. and those experiences have been similar, which is to say excellent! I always check "PlantingTree" first when I need to order out for things that I can't find locally. Initially this was due to their geographical proximity, but lately more due to their excellent track record!

Ginko tree purchase

Have bought 4 or 5 Ginko "12 to 20 inch fingerlings" in the past and none survived. Saw this vendor's ad and checked it out. All looked good in the description, shipping, warranty etc areas and gave support to buying the rather pricy tree. With my past experience in mind of buying "sticks", the idea of getting a 4 to 5 foot specimen really appealed to me. I decided to get it and made the purchase. In about 4 days, a very large sturdy package arrived and stunned my wife! It was a healthy, well-leafed tree that was 5 to 6 feet tall, not 4 to 5! We planted it immediately, watering daily in this high heat and it has responded well, still looking happy and healthy. We are ecstatic over our find and look forward to enjoying this specimen tree for many years into the future! All made possible by a responsible and top-notch company!

Impressive So Far

Ordered a forest pansy redbud and a ginkgo tree. The redbud came in snapped, apparently from shipping. Emailed my concern and had a replacement within days along with an apology. So far a wonderful company with wonderful customer service.
