Windmill Palm Tree Care

The Windmill Palm grows in full sun to part shade. When newly planted in the ground water deeply about 2 times per week. Once established your Windmill Palm is drought tolerant. In hotter climates watering deeply once weekly throughout the summer will provide the best growth, health, and root development especially for the first couple of years after planting.

Add our balanced slow release fertilizer when planting and in early spring for best results. In cooler climates where the foliage gets cold damaged, simply prune back the dead foliage to allow new growth to emerge.

Mulch your palm tree about 2 to 3 inches to protect the roots and reduce the need to water. This is recommended in all zones as it functions to protect the roots from heat and cold.

Windmill Palms are hardy in zones 7-10. During severe winters when the temperatures drop below 10 degrees wrapping the trunk in frost cloth and mulching the roots well will help protect your tree from damage.

Windmill Palms are deer, pest, and disease resistant.

While you can grow Windmill Palms in containers it will require a significant sized container ultimately and ideally you would want to slowly move your tree into larger containers as it outgrows the smaller container. Containerized trees must have pots and soil that drain well. Generally they need to be watered more often and should be fertilized at least twice as often as trees planted in the ground. Patio Windmill palms should only be grown in zones 8 to 11 and transplanted to the ground when older.
