Description

Are you looking for a small, compact shrub with a lot of beauty? We suggest you try the Dorothy Hayden Azalea.

What makes the Dorothy Hayden different from the rest? Developed by Robert Gartell, the Dorothy Hayden comes from New Jersey. The concept behind the development was to select and further breed cultivars with the best performance, in order to extend their flowering period and keep the majority of their leaves in the winter months. Large, showy, pure white, funnel shaped flowers grow on the Dorothy Hayden. They open from May until June. The flowers of the Dorothy Hayden pop up continuously for 2 months. The leaves of the Dorothy Hayden Azalea are mid green, ovate and medium sized. This slow growing evergreen matures to 2 feet in height with a 4 feet spread. This azalea is a compact plant that does not need to be pruned. It can however, be clipped into shape in June.

The great thing about the Dorothy Hayden Azalea is how versatile it is. Due to its small, compact shape the possibilities are endless. What makes it an even more charming addition to your landscape is the bloom and fragrance combination. The Dorothy Hayden Azalea works great in a variety of ways. It is great for shaded woodland, gardens, foundations, hedges, mixed borders, in containers or as a house plant. Dorothy Hayden’s could be used as a specimen or as an accent plant.

How To Care

The Dorothy Hayden Azalea is a low maintenance shrub. It does not need to be pruned or clipped into shape. It is all a matter of preference. The Dorothy Hayden will grow in all garden soil types. It does however, perform best in average to moist soil. It does favor consistent moisture, it is best to keep soil from drying out completely. This azalea shrub likes to be in semi shade to fully shaded areas.

When planting your Azalea be sure you have the right location and conditions for your new plants to thrive.

Planting time: Spring and Fall are ideal times to plant Azaleas. However, if you avoid freezing and extremely hot temperatures you can plant any time of the year.

Sun: Full sun tends to burn most Azaleas especially in warmer climates so look for a site that provides a balanced mix of shade and sun.

Soil: Be sure your soil is well-drained and acidic. If you have alkaline soil, be sure to amend your soil. To acidify your soil amend with compost, elemental sulfur, or use fertilizers specific for acid loving plants. Mulching with pine straw or pine bark will help over time as they begin to break down, but are not an immediate solution. To improve drainage in something like a heavy clay soil, add compost and be sure to loosen up the soil well before planting.

Fertilizer: Choose a fertilizer for acid loving plants. Fertilize in late winter or early spring to give the upcoming blooms a boost.

Pruning: You don’t need to prune azaleas, but pruning after they are done blooming can help encourage a bushier growth and renew an older plant.
