Plant Fertilizer

What is Plant Fertilizer?

Fertilizer is food for plants. It can come from natural or synthetic origins. This food provides elements and micronutrients for plant growth. Fertilizer can stimulate plant growth, improve and increase the quantity and quality of blooms, and help enrich root growth. It can make plants healthier and grow faster. If over-applied it can cause something called fertilizer burn which makes plants sick and weak. Plant fertilizer is applied to the soil or foliage of plants.

How Much Fertilizer Per Plant?

For our Slow Release Fertilizer, use 2 teaspoons per gallon pot size or 1 teaspoon for each foot of height. Our 8 ounce bag of plant food can feed eleven 1 gallon plants, four 3 gallon plants, or three 5 gallon plants. For any other plant fertilizer read the instructions on the bag or container before applying it to your plants.

How to Use Plant Fertilizer

Our Slow Release Fertilizer can be mixed into the top 1 to 3 inches of soil or simply spread over the top of the soil and watered in well. It slowly releases food for your plants over time. Apply every 6 months for best results, especially if you have nutrient deficient soil. If your soil is healthy and nutrient rich, you can apply once yearly in spring.

How Does Fertilizer Affect Plant Growth?

Nitrogen promotes plant growth, development, reproduction. It is the main component of chlorophyll. Potassium helps with growth and the reproduction of plants. Potassium regulates carbon dioxide uptake by opening and closing the stomata. It also activates many growth related enzymes and increases root growth and improves drought resistance. Phosphorus stimulates root development and improves flowers and seed production as well as stem sturdiness. It improves plant quality and increases resistance to disease.

Fertilizer can negatively affect beneficial microorganisms and the plants themselves when applied excessively. Excess fertilizer leads to excess salt in the soil which causes fertilizer burn. It also lowers the pH creating an overly acidic environment. This reduces the availability of nutrients to plants.

What Plant Fertilizer Works Best?

We believe strongly in our specially formulated slow release fertilizer. We blended macronutrients, nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus with important micronutrients, calcium, magnesium, manganese, iron, molybdenum, zinc, and copper in a continual release formula for total plant health. Plantingtree Slow Release fertilizer works for up to six months on shrubs, trees, plants, vegetables, fruit trees, herbs, and more. The polymer coated pearls won’t burn plants.

What are the Main Components of Plant Fertilizer?

The main components (macronutrients) of fertilizer are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Micronutrients like iron, magnesium, zinc, copper, boron, calcium, molybdenum, chlorine, cobalt, and manganese are often added as well.
