Tulip Poplar

Liriodendron tulipifera

An immensely popular tree, the Tulip Poplar, is a fast grower and brilliant yellow show-er! Widely used as a street, shade, or ornamental tree, the Tulip Poplar is hard to beat.

This tree is desired for many reasons. One of the main reasons is the tulip-like flowers that arrive in spring. These stunning flowers are a lovely yellow-green with warm hints of orange at the base. If you love yellow this is the tree for you. In fall the unique, green leaves transition into a vibrant yellow. In addition to the peppy color show, this tree grows at rapid rate of about 3-5 feet per year.

The Tulip Poplar can grow to a height of 70 feet and width of 30-40 feet. So be sure to give it plenty of space. This tree is resistant to pests and disease and extremely low maintenance! This tree performs best in full sun and slightly acidic soils that are moist, but well-drained and loose-textured.

An added Bonus! The flowers of this tree have a fragrance that attracts many types of birds including hummingbirds. Squirrels enjoy nibbling the fruits. And all types of wildlife love to call this tree home!

How to Care

When planting your Tulip Poplar tree be sure you have the right location and conditions for your new tree to thrive. Spring and fall are ideal times to plant. However, if you avoid extreme temperatures you can plant your tree almost any time of the year.

Tulip Poplars thrive in full sun and are adaptable to almost any well-drained soil. This poplar is able to tolerate wet soil, but is also drought tolerant. Water deeply 2-3 times weekly with a hose for the first 3 months after planting. This helps the tree's roots establish properly and grow downward rather than staying shallow in search of water. You want to continue to keep the ground moist, especially for the first year in order to get the fastest growth. Try using a Treegator and/or adding 2 inches of mulch to your young tree to reduce hand watering needs. Water your mature tree in dry periods for best growth. Fertilize in early spring with our slow release fertilizer. Poplars don't generally require pruning, but, if needed, prune when they are dormant in winter or early spring to remove any dead, dying, or crowded branches, or to maintain shape.

Prevent disease and pests is by providing the best care for your plants. Proper location choice, watering, and fertilization are the keys to your success.

Beautiful tree

The Poplar Tulips grow very quickly with beautiful big leaves. The deer like them also, so while they are little they need fencing around them to protect them from the deer.

Tree of the Tulip Kind - this is being written within a week of planting

The tree came in a tall box. The tree was satisfactorily watered as well as packed. We put the tree on the east side of the house the day it came. So far it is doing well, the tree has not been in the ground a week yet. I have watered it every day. I was not home when FedEx left the tree, but I left a message on my door for them. They complied with my request and left the tree on my porch.

A little shorter then expected

The tree was only just a little over five feet tall, for nearly 90 dollars I was hoping that it would've been closer to six feet tall. I purchased the 5-6 foot option but overall the tree came in good shape
