Myrica cerifera
Save $9.00

The Wax Myrtle is an easy, evergreen plant that gives you endless possibilities in your landscape.

With their shiny, green, dense foliage and extremely rapid growth you can't grow wrong. These plants can grow up to 5 feet in a single growing season! You'll love how quickly your Wax Myrtle will grow however you choose to use it in your landscape.

Wax Myrtles can be grown naturally as a large, full shrub or with some lower branch pruning you can have a gorgous, multi-trunk tree. Either form looks great as a hedge or screen. Wax Myrtles are extremely hardy so you can really craft your hedge however you like. And with that rapid growth you can even change the style from year to year! Get creative and artsy or classy and simple! Or maybe somewhere inbetween is more your style. Either way, this tough, beautiful plant gives you unlimited options.

How To Care

Plant in full to partial sun. Wax Myrtles happily grow in any soil. They tolerate drought, salt, and sand. Wax Myrtles grow in warmer planting zones from 7 to 11 and even thrive at the beach. These shrub trees are pest and disease resistant and once established are maintenance free! Remember to always keep your plants fertilized with a high quality, slow release fertilizer. We have our own custom blend made to give your new plants the best start!

To prune or not to prune? Wax Myrtles can withstand heavy pruning, but don't require it. Late winter is the ideal time for heavy pruning. Prune dead or diseased and thin out crowded branches any time of the year.

Landscape Ideas

Are you getting tired of looking at your neighbor?  Planting Wax Myrtle Trees will fix that problem.

Start out by the property line.  Don't plant directly on the line because they will fill out and grow on your neighbor's property.  Plant about 5 feet off of the property line and about 5-6 feet apart.  You can stagger your trees for a more natural effect.

In the Design above, we have wax myrtle trees in groups of 4. They are spaced out at 6-8 Feet apart on center. At first they may look too spaced out but they grow fast. We decided to use Green Giant Arborvitae Trees to also help with screening. We placed the Green Giant Trees in the corners because this is where we needed the most privacy to block out the taller houses behind the fence. They grow tall and will eventually hide the houses.

We then placed a birch tree in the left corner as a focal point. We will be lighting this tree up and night to enhance our landscape. On the right side we placed a Eastern Redbud Tree. This Tree is absolutely beautiful in the spring with its purple blooms.

To add even more color, we dressed up the front of the planting bed with some drift roses. They will flower all summer long and come in a variety of colors. We will keep the wax myrtles at about 10 Feet tall so that we can have full privacy in this yard.

You will also want to use a dyed mulch or pine needles for ground cover. Mulch will also help your wax myrtles and other plants grow faster without having to compete with the lawn.

Great plants, great price

healthy plants but a bit overpriced for size

The 2 wax myrtle plants were packed impressively well to prevent damage during transit. The plants looked healthy and in good shape too and the entire process from ordering to transit was lightening fast. The only disappointment was the size and price of these 3-gallon plants not being in line to what I purchased at the local Home Depot or Lowe's over the Spring. I bought 6 of these 3 gallon wax myrtles at my local Lowe's in the Spring for $23. They also had thicker trunks and were much taller. I suppose this is the way to go if you are in a bind to finish a planting project before the winter and the plants you need are no longer available at the big box facilities. All in all a good shopping experience at the Planting Tree.
