when to plant wisteria

When to Plant Wisteria

Fall and spring are the best times to plant this vine. Mild climates can plant in summer and in winter when the ground is diggable. Be sure to provide plenty of water when summer planting.

How to Care for Wisteria

Wisteria can grow well in sun or shade, but full sun will result in the best flowering. These plants are very adaptable, but prefer moist, well-drained, fertile soil. We recommend adding a layer of mulch and fertilizing with a balanced, slow release fertilizer when planting and each spring.

When Does Wisteria Bloom?

These flowering vines bloom from spring to early summer. In most climates they flower for about 2 months starting in May or June.

Can you Grow Wisteria in Pots?

Growing vines in containers is a great option to control size and maintain a plant in an environment where ground planting is difficult or not allowed. Wisterias grown in pots will need to be watered more often. Cut back your plant every year when it goes dormant. In zones 5 to 6a the container should be moved into a basement or garage during winter. For best results, use an organic planting mix for your pots.

How to Prune Wisteria

Pruning this plant will help you get the most out it’s blooms. Trim back at least ½ of the growth from the prior year in late winter. This vine blooms on new growth so you can prune this plant back completely every year and not miss out on flowers.
