Description

The Arctic Frost Satsuma tree can withstand short-term temperatures as low as 9 degrees according to the Texas A and M Research and Extension Center. This cold-hardy citrus tree grows successfully in zones 8 to 11 in the ground. It can also be grown as a patio plant in any USDA growing zone. The cold tolerance of this tree gives growers in colder growing zones some extra padding time for getting this tree protected during winter.

You would think that this exciting feature of the Arctic Frost Satsuma Mandarin tree would translate to poor quality fruit. But fortunately for those of us that love growing citrus outside of its rightful growing regions, Arctic Frost mandarins are delicious. They also have few or no seeds and easy to peel skin! Moreover, these small fruit trees are beautiful. The glossy green leaves are evergreen. The pretty flowers are fabulously fragrant and the growing fruit adds a great look to your landscape or indoor living space.

How to Care

Find a sunny spot with well-drained soil.

Newly planted citrus trees should be watered deeply about 2 times per week during establishment. After establishment, the Arctic Frost Satsuma Mandarin tree should be watered when the soil is dry. Citrus trees are drought tolerant, but their leaves love humidity. Gardeners in dry climates should water over the leaves for the best results. Indoor gardeners should mist the leaves daily in winter to ensure this plant has the proper levels of humidity to thrive.

Feed citrus trees with a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring and late summer. Potted orange trees should be fed 3 to 4 times per year. Feed citrus trees that are planted in containers at the end of winter, early summer, and again in fall. Another excellent option for feeding citrus is Espoma Citrus-Tone. This organic formula was created specifically for citrus plants. Follow the directions on the bag.

The Arctic Frost Satsuma tree can be grown in zone 8, 9, 10, and 11 in the ground. It can be grown in cooler zones as a patio plant or even indoors (if you simulate the right conditions). Move this dwarf orange tree indoors when temperatures start to dip below 40 degrees.

Prune this tree any time of year.

Citrus trees are self-fertile.
