Description

It is hard to believe that you can grow a tree in your yard that populated the earth over 20 million years ago...AND you can order it online AND have it delivered to your home! The Dawn Redwood was thought extinct until the mid-20th century when a group of these deciduous conifers were discovered growing in China. Fast forward to today...this endangered tree is available to American consumers for their landscapes!

The Dawn Redwood is a distinctive tree that your family will treasure for years to come.  Redwoods are incredibly long living trees so you will never need to worry about replacing this tree. This ancient tree is extremely fast growing, generally averaging between 3-5 feet per year. Under ideal conditions this tree can even grow 7 feet in one year!

The soft green needles are fine, feathery, and flattened creating an attractive, layered look. The foliage of this conifer is incredibly unusual because it goes through a fall transition. The autumn color is a magnificent golden orange that is unrivaled. The shape of this deciduous tree is pyramidal although younger trees will look somewhat bare and free-form in appearance. True to their name Redwoods tout exquisite reddish bark.  This bark has pretty, yet rustic streaks and swirls that only add to its beauty. This feature allows the Dawn Redwood to keep your landscape interesting even in winter.

The Dawn Redwood is the perfect focal or specimen tree for your yard. The tree can grow over 60 feet tall and 25 feet wide so be sure you have the space. This is not a tree you want up against your home! Give this tree at least 15 feet from your home or other trees so that it has plenty of space to grow. The Dawn Redwood is an excellent street tree. It is also perfect for wet spots in your yard where nothing else will grow.

This conifer thrives in full sun and acidic soil. While they will grow best in well-drained, moist soils, Redwoods can tolerate wet and dry conditions. Once established this tree is drought tolerant. This tree is very adaptable to various soil types and will even tolerate clay soil. The Dawn Redwood is an extremely hardy tree that will tolerate pollution so it's works well in urban environments. Deer are not a problem for this sturdy tree. The Dawn Redwood is very easy to grow. If planted properly, after establishment, it will survive with no care at all.

How To Care

Plant the Dawn Redwood any time of year; just take care to avoid temperature extremes. This conifer thrives in full sun and acidic soil. While they will grow best in well-drained moist soils, Redwoods can tolerate wet and dry conditions. Keep your tree watered deeply about 2 times per week when newly planted so that the roots grow properly. This is especially important with such a large and fast growing tree. Once established this tree is drought tolerant. This tree is very adaptable to various soil types and will even tolerate clay soil. We do recommend mulching this tree in about 2-3 inches to help keep the soil moist.  Fertilize once yearly in spring with a balanced, slow release fertilizer.  There is no need to prune your Dawn Redwood.  On the occasion you have a dead or diseased branch, trim it off anytime of the year. The Dawn Redwood is an extremely hardy tree that will tolerate pollution so it's works well in urban environments. Deer are not a problem for this deciduous conifer.
