Description

With an average growth rate of about 2 feet per year, the Shumard Oak is the fastest growing red oak. In its youth, this majestic tree will grow even faster, quickly adding shade to your landscape and cooling your home.

But the hardy Shumard Oak is so much more than just a shade tree. It's great for the environment, providing food and shelter for wildlife as well as cleaning the air. This Oak is native to the United States. So, you can feel great about planting an easy to grow oak tree.

The Shumard Oak tree is impressive and stunning. Shiny green lobed leaves emerge in spring and get the beauty started. In late summer, acorns begin to form, decorating your tree fall through early winter. The brilliant red and orange autumn foliage will really liven up your landscape.

Shumard Oaks love full sun and are adaptable to any type of soil. Be sure to fertilize with our balanced, slow release fertilizer when planting and again in spring especially if you have poor soil. Fertilizing will help your tree achieve an optimal growth rate. Water deeply about twice per week for about the first 3 months so the roots will grow properly. Once established, this oak tree is drought tolerant. This tree rarely has any issues with pests and disease and is salt and pollution tolerant.

A symbol of strength and resilience, the low maintenance Shumard Oak will be a perfect addition to your home.

How To Care

Shumard Oak Trees are easy to grow and extremely adaptable. Spring and Fall are ideal times to plant. However, if you avoid freezing and hot temperatures you can plant your oak tree almost any time of the year.

This Oak thrives in full sun and is adaptable to any soil, even tolerating wet areas. These trees are drought tolerant once established. Water deeply twice weekly for the first 3 months after planting. This helps the roots establish properly. Add a layer of 2 to 3 inches of mulch when planting to help keep the soil moist. Do not allow the mulch to touch the trunk as this increases the risk of pests and disease. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow release fertilizer. Oaks do not generally require pruning, but, if needed, prune when they are dormant in winter or early spring to remove any dead, dying, or crowded branches, or to maintain shape. This Oak is pollution and salt tolerant and rarely has issues with insects or disease. For additional tips, be sure to read our article on Shade tree care.

Landscape Ideas

Be sure to provide your Shumard Oak tree plenty of room to grow. Reaching heights up to 80 feet and a width up to 60 feet at maturity, this oak is a substantial tree. This tree is ideal to be your landscape’s focal point. If you have a large yard or piece of land, oaks are great for planting in a row to provide shade in the summer. The River Birch tree is also a great alternative.

Beautiful little tree

My tree arrived quickly and in good condition! Glossy green on arrival at the very end of September, it has faded to a beautiful fall red By late October. It also has beautiful silvery bark! I expect it will lose its smooth bark with age but definitely something to enjoy while it’s so young. I hope it will come back strong in the spring.

Convenient, Great Packaging, Fast processing. Nice healthy tree.

The price was a little high for a 5 gallon tree. I could have gotten a 15 gallon tree over 9' high locally for 5 dollars less. With that said, it was convenient that the tree came to my door. It was received in good shape and is doing very well where I planted it. It was just starting to come out of dormancy when it appeared with only a few new leaves. Now a week later it is covered in new growth.
