Facts:

1. The Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood' is an award winning tree. It is one of the few Japanese maples to be awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. It is regarded as one of the best upright Japanese maples.

2. Many Japanese maples prefer some shade especially in warmer climates. The bloodgood has very good sun tolerance even in warmer climates.

3. Like most Japanese maples, bloodgoods are native to Japan, Korea, and China.

Japanese Maple Care

The bloodgood maple is a low maintenance tree once it is established. This Japanese maple variety performs well in full sunlight or part shade and prefers a slightly acidic, fertile, moist soil. Feed your Japanese maple tree in spring with a slow release fertilizer. Water your bloodgood maple tree when the soil begins to dry out for best growth. This hardy Japanese maple grows in zones 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.

Pro Tips:

• Japanese maples like moist soil, but do become drought tolerant once they are established. We recommend keeping this tree watered throughout its first summer after planting. This will encourage better and faster growth and will help protect against leaf scorch for trees planted in full sun.

• Mulch Japanese maples after planting to encourage the soil to hold onto moisture longer. This also keeps weeds that compete for nutrients and moisture away and reduces hand watering needs. Pine mulch or pine straw are good choices for bloodgood maples.

• We also recommend adding a thick layer of mulch for winter protection in the first year after planting in growing zones 5 and 6.
