Emerald Green Arborvitae for Sale | Know Before You Buy

The Emerald Green Arborvitae (Thuja) was originally developed in Denmark which is why you see ‘Smaragd’ (the danish word for emerald) instead of ‘Emerald Green’ sometimes. Yes, it is the same tree. This evergreen is a very popular privacy tree and it is easy to see why. Read on to learn all you need to Know Before You Buy before clicking that Emerald Green Arborvitae for Sale link.

Emerald Green Arborvitae Key Features

Size. Unlike Thuja Green Giant and Leyland Cypress, this privacy tree stays a manageable size, only reaching 10 to 15 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide.

Growth rate. For its size the Emerald Green Arborvitae grows fairly fast. When it is a young tree it can grow 1 to 2 feet per year. As it ages it will grow at a rate between 6 and 12 inches per year.

Foliage. The Emerald Green has soft deep green foliage that is quite dense. It has layers of greenery sprays that are feather-like, adding a fancier look than other privacy trees. This tree adds great texture and an attractive, upscale look to any landscape.
Low maintenance. Once established this arborvitae is drought tolerant. It is also pest and disease resistant. The Emerald Green Thuja is adaptable to any well-drained soil, including clay, and is tolerant of black walnut (juglone), and pollution.

Cold hardy. This Thuja tree tolerates extremely cold conditions, growing in the coldest regions in the United States. It is recommended for US growing zones 3 to 8.

Emerald Green Arborvitae Spacing

For a privacy hedge, plant about 3 feet apart on center. This evergreen tree has very dense foliage and is fairly even in width from top to bottom, so you want to avoid planting Emerald Green trees too close.

Plant at least 4 feet from your home or a fence to give the foliage enough air circulation, more if you want to be able to get behind them when they are full size. The roots of the Arborvitae Emerald Green are not invasive so planting near pools, sidewalks, driveways, etc isn’t a problem. Just give the roots at least a couple of feet on each side to spread out when planting next to something deep like a foundation.

For specimen or group plantings plant about 5 to 6 feet apart to give each tree plenty of room to shine on its own.

Emerald Green Arborvitae Care

After planting and establishment most of your work is done when it comes to Thuja Emerald Green trees.

Plant in full sun and keep the soil moist for the first 3 months. Water daily for the first week after planting and water deeply about twice weekly for the first couple months. For best results water once weekly during this tree’s first summer. In zone 8 especially, keep up with summer watering throughout the trees life when conditions are dry.

Feed in spring with a balanced slow release fertilizer.

Emerald Green Thujas don’t generally need pruned unless you are growing them as a privacy hedge. If you need to prune to control height, shear yearly, and take off as little as possible. Do not wait until your hedge is too tall. Hard topping should be avoided. Remove dead, broken, or diseased branches immediately. Any heavy pruning should be done in early spring.
