A Brief History of the Green Giant Arborvitae
D.T. Poulsen was a plant grower and breeder from Denmark. In 1967 he presented the US National Arboretum with a Thuja standishii x plicata tree. This tree was a cross between the Japanese thuja and the western redcedar. From this plant a clone was propagated and the green giant arborvitae was born. This fast growing and sturdy evergreen tree has become increasingly popular over the years especially as a privacy tree.
Green Giant Arborvitae Description
The thuja green giant is a fast growing privacy tree that is excellent for privacy hedges, sound barriers, and windbreaks. It grows in a pyramidal shape from 40 to 60 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide. The foliage is soft, feathery, and dense.
Green Giant Arborvitae Facts
With the uncanny ability to add 3 to 5 feet per year in height, the growth rate of the green giant arborvitae is fast.
Despite many of its relatives not being very tolerant of deer, the thuja green giant is deer resistant. Protect very young trees with netting or repellent in deer heavy areas. Deer may damage small trees.
The green giant is much more pest and disease resistant than its competitor the leyland cypress and many other similar trees.
Green Giant Arborvitae Care
Plant arborvitae green giants in full or part sun in growing zones 5 to 9. These hardy evergreens are no maintenance and drought tolerant once they are established. However they should be on a rigorous watering schedule while they are establishing. Water deeply at least twice weekly for the first month and once weekly for months 2 and 3. If you plant in spring continue watering once weekly through summer especially in the southern US. Adding an inch or two of mulch around your newly planted tree will help the soil retain water longer. This fast growing tree does seem to soak up fertilizer so you can feed it with a slow release fertilizer in early spring and again in late summer or early fall if desired.
