What is a Daylily?

Daylily (Hemerocallis) plants are an inexpensive and easy landscape option. These plants require almost no maintenance and still return year after year. You get beautiful flowers and lovely texture with grass-like leaves. Daylilies are perfect for pops of color staggered throughout your landscape or stunning show off borders. Daylily plants can grow in full sun or part shade and any well-drained soil. These easy to grow plants are adaptable and tolerate pollution, salt, and drought.

When to Plant Daylilies

If the ground isn’t frozen you can plant daylilies. However there are times of the year that offer the best results, but it varies slightly depending on your region. The best times to plant daylilies in the south is fall or early spring. For the northern US the ideal planting time is spring. Early fall is the next best time to plant in the north.

How to Plant Daylilies

Our daylily plants come planted in pots. This takes some of the guesswork of planting them in the ground. Water you plant thoroughly right before planting. Dig a hole about twice the size of the pot your plant came in. When you place your daylily in the hole be sure the top of the root ball is just slightly higher than the existing soil line. Backfill the soil and tamp in down gently with your hands. Water deeply every day for the first week and about twice a week for the first couple months until your daylily is established.

How to Transplant Daylilies

Dig up the entire plant after digging a hole where it will be moved. Replant as quickly as you can and water well for best results. If you want to divide your plant at this time simply use a spade to split it into clumps. Make sure each clump is at least 6 inches wide and has a nice chunk of healthy roots. Do not divide daylilies more than every 3 years.

When to Divide Daylily Plants

The best times of year to divide daylilies is in early spring right when you begin to see new growth emerging or in fall after they have finished blooming.

How to Care for Daylilies?

Daylily plants are very adaptable. They can grow in full sun to part shade and any well drained soil. Daylilies planted in full sun will bloom better than those in shade. Daylilies should be watered deeply about twice per week when newly planted to ensure proper root development and fast establishment. Once established these plants are drought tolerant. Daylilies are hardy plants that can survive under harsh conditions like pollution, salt, drought, and nutrient-poor soils.
