Evergreen Privacy Trees

What are the Fastest Growing Evergreen Privacy Trees?

The fastest growing evergreen privacy trees can grow 3 to 5 feet in a single growing season! These trees include thuja green giant, leyland cypress, cryptomeria radicans, sapphire cypress tree (arizona cypress variety) and wax myrtle. There are many other fast growing evergreen privacy trees that can grow 2 to 3 feet per year. These include douglas fir, cedar deodar, Italian cypress, nellie stevens holly, and needlepoint holly.

What Evergreen Trees Are Good For Privacy?

Which trees offer privacy and are evergreen? We carry a huge selection of evergreen trees for privacy. The most popular privacy trees are the leyland cypress and the thuja green giant. But there are many more options like the cryptomeria radicans, Colorado blue spruce, douglas fir, Canadian hemlock, and the sapphire cypress tree. You can choose more than one type of tree for a great look and a hardier privacy screen. We really like wax myrtles or ligustrum for a southern or warm climate evergreen privacy hedge. There are many hollies that are excellent for privacy. We recommend the emerald green arborvitae and the blue point juniper for smaller screens.

How Far Apart To Plant Evergreen Trees For Privacy

How far apart should I plant evergreen trees for privacy? This can vary a good bit depending on the type of tree and how quickly you need your privacy hedge to fill in. I prefer to lean toward giving trees more space so they are healthier and happier in the long run. Here are some examples of spacing recommendations for different trees. Carolina sapphire cypress trees should be planted about 8 feet apart. Emerald green arborvitae need at least 3 feet between trees, but giving them closer to 4 will offer them more room to grow. Hicks yews are narrow and tend to grow upward. They only need 2 to 3 feet between trees. The thuja green giant needs at least 5 feet, but preferably closer to 8 feet of spacing. The Leyland cypress is a bit wider up and down so I prefer them to have a bit more room than green giants. If you are desperate for fast privacy go 6 feet apart on center, but if you can wait a little longer plant them 8 to 10 feet apart.

Which Evergreen Privacy Trees Grow In Shade?

The Canadian hemlock is the only privacy tree that is able to tolerate heavy shade. However the nellie stevens holly, cryptomeria radicans, and the needlepoint holly grow well in part shade. In warmer climates many privacy trees (even ones that prefer full sun) can handle some shade.

How To Plant Evergreen Trees for Privacy?

Of course trees can be planted in a straight line to create a privacy screen, but consider curving the line and layering plants by height for a more natural look. Another option is a staggered landscape plan. Plant 2 rows instead of 1. For something like Thuja Green Giant or Leyland Cypress plan for about 6 to 8 feet between trees on the diagonal. This will leave you with about 6 to 10 feet of space between each tree within the rows and the rows will be approximately 4 to 6 feet apart. This gives you faster privacy while offering the trees more space.
