Utah Growing Zones and Climate

Utah has a pretty broad spectrum of climates throughout the state so you will want to double check your growing zone to be sure the plants you chose are right for your area. According to the USDA Utah includes growing zones 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b, 6a, 6b, 7a, 7b, 8a, 8b, and 9a. A majority of the state consists of zones 5b to 7b. The coldest areas and, therefore, the lowest growing zones are concentrated mainly in the northeast portion of the state. The warmest climates are mainly in southern Utah. Utah tends to be dry, so choose drought tolerant plants for best results.

When to Plant Evergreen Shrubs Utah

The best time to plant evergreen bushes is spring or fall. Cold tolerant evergreens can be planted in winter when the ground is digable. In warmer zones, like southern Utah, avoid summer planting. Cold regions should plant evergreen shrubs at least 6 weeks before the ground freezes so they can begin to establish prior to severe temperatures. For growing zones 4 and 5, spring, summer or early fall planting is ideal.

When to Prune Evergreen Shrubs Utah

Prune most evergreen bushes in early spring before new growth emerges. Flowering evergreen shrubs should be pruned when they are done blooming to avoid removing any flower buds. Hedges can be pruned yearly in late spring after new growth has emerged.

How to Plant Evergreen Shrubs Utah

First water your potted plant thoroughly to get the roots wet and ready for planting. Next, dig a hole about twice the width of the pot. The root ball should be slightly visible above the existing soil line. Backfill the hole with the existing soil (or mix an amendment with at least 50% native soil if needed). Tamp the soil down gently with your hands to remove air pockets. Add about 2 inches of mulch around your plant and water until the ground is saturated. Water deeply every day for the first week and about 2 to 3 times per week for the first 2 to 3 months while your evergreen shrub is establishing.

Privacy Shrubs for Utah

For warmer regions of Utah (zones 7 and up) Ligustrum (Japanese privet) and Wax Myrtle are excellent choices for a fast growing privacy hedge. Hollies are a great choice for zones 6 to 9. Nellie Stevens Hollies can grow 2 to 3 feet per year! For cooler zones try the Blue Wonder Colorado Spruce, Hicks Yew, or the Mugo Pine. Some privacy trees for Utah include Carolina Sapphire Cypress, Thuja Green Giant, Emerald Green Arborvitae, Blue Point Juniper, Italian Cypress, Leyland Cypress, Cryptomeria Radicans, Cedar Deodar, Canadian Hemlock, and Blue Douglas Fir. Be sure to check the recommended growing zone and site requirements before choosing your plant.

Flowering Evergreen Shrubs Utah

For warmer growing zones loropetalum, ligustrum, azalea, distylium, and camellia are nice flowering evergreen bushes for Utah. Some azaleas and camellias can grow into a zone 6, but most are recommended for zones 7 and up. There aren’t any options for zones 4 or 5, but if you are looking for a pop of color in your landscape, look to the Gold Mop Cypress or Fire Chief Arborvitae. They offer bold color year-round!

Fast Growing Evergreen Shrubs for Utah

At growth rates that can exceed 3 feet in a single year, Ligustrum (privet) and Wax Myrtle are the fastest growing evergreen shrubs. Nellie Stevens holly and Needlepoint holly are close behind, growing 2 to 3 feet per year. There, of course, are many fast growing evergreen trees for Utah including the Leyland Cypress, Carolina Sapphire Cypress, Cryptomeria Radicans, and Thuja Green Giant.
