Choose the appropriate site for your Florida Trees. Check the soil, water, and sunlight recommendations for your chosen tree. Dig a hole at least twice as wide as the root ball of your Florida tree. Place your tree in the hole. Step back and check each side to ensure your tree is straight in the hole. The root ball of your tree should be slightly above the soil line. Never plant the root ball lower than the soil line. Fill the hole with water. New trees like a lot of water especially in subtropical climates. This helps them establish properly and quickly. Once the water is absorbed, backfill the soil around the root ball. Mulch Florida trees with 1 to 2 inches of mulch. Extend the mound a few inches beyond the tree canopy. Mulching is very beneficial in Florida as it helps the ground hold water longer which is so critical for plants in hotter climates. It also protects the roots and keeps weeds that compete for water and nutrients away. Water again until the ground is completely saturated. Deeply water daily for the first week and at least twice per week for the next month or two while your tree is establishing.
