When Does Spirea Bloom

Spirea bushes bloom from mid or late spring through summer. Little Princess generally blooms from May to June. Japanese Spirea Gold Mound flowers in June and July. Bloom time varies with climate and weather conditions.

How to Plant Spirea

Water your potted Spirea deeply prior to planting. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball of your plant. Once placed in the hole, the root ball of your plant should be slightly higher than the soil line. Fill the hole with water, backfill the hole with soil, and tamp the soil down gently with your hands to remove air pockets. Apply 1 to 2 inches of mulch around your plant to prevent weeds and reduce watering requirements. Water again until the water begins to pool on the ground surface. Water daily for the first week.

How to Prune Spirea | When to Prune Spirea

After your plant has finished flowering prune back or “deadhead" the spent flowers to promote re-blooming if desired. An easy way to deadhead is to lightly shear the whole bush rather than trying to prune every flower. This light pruning will also help to maintain the shape and compact nature of the plant. Heavy pruning is optional, but Spireas do respond well to pruning, especially when used to rejuvenate an older plant. Prune up to 1/3 of your plant in late winter or early spring for best results. How to Care for Spirea

Spireas thrive in full to part sun and are adaptable to any moist, well-drained soil. Water deeply 2 times per week for the first 3 months while your plant is establishing. After about a year in the ground Spireas are drought tolerant. They will perform best if you keep them watered deeply once per week when there is drought in spring and summer, especially for the first 2 years. Fertilize with a slow release fertilizer in spring.
