Grass Seed for Sale | Know Before You Buy

The Best Grass Seed for Sale

Professionals use Lesco because it is the best brand of seed for performance and quality. With the highest germination rates in the industry, Lesco is the brand we choose for ourselves and our customers. The best type of grass for you will depend on your climate.

When to Plant Grass Seed

Plant cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass, perennial rye grasses, and tall fescues in fall. Daytime temperatures should be between 60 and 85 degrees.

You will have the highest germination rates with warm-season grasses, like Bermuda grass, Bahia grass, Centipede grass and Zoysia by planting in spring and early summer when daytime temperatures are averaging about 80 degrees.

Planting Grass Seed

Check that the soil pH is between 6.5 and 7.4. Prepare the site and apply Lesco Starter Fertilizer 18-24-12.

Before applying seed, make sure areas are prepared correctly. You will need good seed-to-soil contact for seed to germinate. Remove any debris, dead grass, etc. before proceeding.

Spread the seed at the recommended rate for the type you choose. 3-5lbs/1000sqft for aeration and overseeding with fescue. 10lbs./1000sqft for a newly seeded lawn.

Watering Grass Seed

Water newly broadcast seed by lightly misting 2 to 3 times per day. Keep the ground moist, but not wet. When your grass germinates begin to water heavier, but not as often.

You should be able to walk on the lawn without sinking in. Monitor your seed daily for at least the first two weeks to make sure it doesn't dry out but stays moist.

When Do You Overseed?

Overseeding is the process of spreading seed over an existing lawn either to fill in bare spots and thicken up the existing grass or, in the case of southern lawns, to give dormant warm-season grasses some color and life with a cool-season grass. Fall is the best time to overseed with cool-season grasses.

Warm season lawns can be overseeded in fall with a perennial grass, like Double Eagle Select Perennial Ryegrass to keep your lawn green during the winter months.

How Long Does it Take Grass Seed to Germinate

Different types of grass germinate at varying times. The same seed type can germinate at differing rates in dissimilar climates. Most grasses will emerge within 7 to 21 days. Be patient, as long as your seed is kept moist after it is applied and you have good seed-to-soil contact, it will germinate and you can enjoy a nice dense dark green lawn.
