How to Care for Red Roses

Sunlight

You will get the best red color if you plant your red rose bushes in full sun, but they can grow well in part sun conditions too.

Soil

Roses are adaptable, but the soil should be well-drained. Wet soils encourage fungal issues and other pests and disease.

Water

Newly planted red rose plants should be watered deeply about twice per week for the first couple of months. Once established, water rose bushes when the soil is dry. Always water roses at the base of the plant; never water over the leaves.

Food

Feed roses in spring with a slow-release fertilizer. If your soil is nutrient deficient, feed red drift roses and red knock-out roses again in mid to late summer. If you have issues with insects and need to feed your rose plants, Fertilome Rose and Flower Fertilizer is a great choice. It is an insecticide and fertilizer in one.

Pest and Disease Control

Fertilome Triple Action Plus treats insects, fungal disease, and mites on roses and more. For minor fungal infections and insect problems try neem oil. It is natural and effective.

Pruning

Trim flowers anytime to enjoy cut red roses in your home. Pruning rose bushes in early spring will keep them looking great. Drift roses should be pruned back by ⅓ to ½ while knock-out roses enjoy more severe pruning back to 6 inches to 1 foot from the ground.
