View full detailsWhat are 3 Gallon Shrubs?
3 gallon shrubs are bushes grown in 3 gallon nursery pots. These shrubs are more mature than 1 gallon shrubs often by a couple of years. These plants have a more developed root system and sturdier thicker trunks and branches. 3 gallon bushes can be twice the size of the same plant in a 1 gallon pot so you get more instant color and impact than you do with smaller shrubs.
How Big is a 3 Gallon Shrub?
3 gallon shrubs have a root ball around 10 X 11 inches. These shrubs are usually 1 to 3 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide, but this varies depending on the type and variety of plant. Low growing spreading shrubs tend to be shorter and wider. While upright shrubs tend to be taller, but more narrow. Many flowering bushes and other compact shrubs tend to be rounded and as tall as they are wide. Dwarf plants tend to be on the smaller side because they grow slower above ground and to a smaller mature size.
How Old is a 3 Gallon Shrub?
3 gallon shrubs are generally 3 or 4 year old plants. This differs depending on the size of the particular bush and the growth rate of its roots. The goal when growing potted plants is to get the plant well rooted and replant (upsize) it before the roots are too full in the pot.
How to Plant 3 Gallon Shrubs
Dig a hole about 24 inches wide and 10 inches deep. Place your 3 gallon shrub evenly in the hole. Be sure the top of the root ball is slightly higher than the existing soil line and backfill with the existing soil. Water deeply until the water begins to pool.
What is the Size of a 3 Gallon Pot?
A 3 gallon plant pot is going to be between 10 and 12 inches wide and tall. 3 gallon planters tend to be about the same height and width, but it does vary with the pot style. 3 gallon pots hold less than 1/2 of a cubic foot of potting soil.
