How to Care for Encore Azaleas
Plant these Azaleas in full sun to part shade. Water deeply twice weekly for 2 to 3 months after planting. Once established, these bushes are drought tolerant. However, a deep watering once weekly during periods of drought will encourage better growth and blooms. Fertilize Azalea bushes in early spring with our slow release fertilizer. Read on for additional info on Azalea care.
How to Plant Encore Azaleas
When planting Encore Azaleas, dig a hole at least twice the width of the root ball and not quite as deep as the root ball is tall. Place the bush evenly in the hole. Be sure the top of the root ball is slightly higher than the existing soil line and backfill with the soil you dug out. Water deeply until the water begins to pool. Apply 1 to 2 inches of pine straw or pine bark mulch to reduce watering needs and weeds. Azaleas like an acidic soil and pine mulches will help acidify the soil over time.
When to Fertilize Encore Azaleas
Since these plants are rebloomers you may want to fertilize multiple times during the growing season to boost flower quantity and quality. Follow the recommendations on the Azalea Fertilizer you choose. Our balanced slow release fertilizer feeds your plants for 6 months. We recommend using our fertilizer in spring. You can use it again in late summer or early fall if your soil is nutrient weak or your plants aren’t blooming or growing well. We recommend a second round of fertilizer for Encore Azaleas that are grown in pots.
When Should You Prune Encore Azaleas?
Prune these Azaleas right after the spring bloom finishes for best results. According to the breeders of these select Azaleas, waiting until later in the year increases the likelihood of clipping off the azalea flower buds of the next bloom cycle. How to Prune Encore Azaleas
Pruning Encore Azaleas isn’t necessary. These reblooming Azaleas maintain a neat compact shape and small size. If you choose to prune to control size or shape or renew an older plant, do not remove more than ⅓ of the plant at a time.
