The variegated dwarf Radicans Gardenia are moderate feeders so be careful not to over fertilize which would aggravate the root system and may end up causing root rot. The greatest challenge to growing Gardenias is root disease, long periods of wet soil, cool temps and low sun exposure all make for a tuff task. These Gardenias thrive in acidic soils with good drainage and love the morning sun exposure with filtered sun in the afternoons. Gardenias can be susceptible to spider mite, mealy bug, scale and whitefly.
Bring soil to a visual dryness between waterings. When watering, saturate the soil until water drips from the bottom of your plant pot. Gardenias love growing in clay pots which also promote healthy root growth. Allowing your soil to become alkaline will turn the leaves a pale green to yellow color and the flower growth will stop. Be sure to keep these between a 4.5 to 6.0 ph scale.
